My first mikvah
Last week, if someone had said to me that I would never cleanse myself in a mikvah, I wouldn’t have put up an argument. I wasn’t opposed to it, but I never thought that I would seek out the experience. So to have my first ritual bath in the Ari Mikvah, in the same place that the creator of Kabbalah used to visit daily was, to say the least, a spiritual experience.
The bath in the mikvah, in which I partook during a day trip to the holy city of Safed, was far and away the highlight of the day, even though I also ate at my first falafel stand, something I’d been looking forward to ever since I’d received my acceptance e-mail from Birthright.
I can’t say much in the way of describing what happened at the mikvah because it’s all a blur. Once I got over the initial uneasiness of undressing in what was essentially a public place, the quick dip in the freezing cold water took only a matter of seconds, and had ended before I could process where I was or what I was doing. But I can say that for the next few hours, I felt physically refreshed on a level I had never felt before, and despite the temperature of the water and air (both were probably about 40-45 degrees), my body felt much warmer after the event.
Some more observations:
• I bargained for the first time in an Israeli market today. I talked a grumpy old man down to 55 shekels (about $16) for an IDF sweatshirt. I had a blast. I think I did well for myself, but I’m not sure. I know I got better deals than most of my friends who purchased souvenirs, but we could all just be stupid Americans, which only makes me a slightly less stupid American.
• I was disappointed by the falafel stand, but not because the food was bad. I think I had built the idea up so much in my mind that it couldn’t have possibly lived up to my expectations. I think what I did was the equivalent of going to a hot dog stand in New York City expecting a gourmet frank. Lesson learned.
• I’m growing frustrated at some of the limitations that Birthright is placing on us. According to my counselors, Tuesday night we went out clubbing in Tiberias. Not that I came to Israel to party, but apparently Birthright’s definition of clubbing is taking us to a British pub with no Israelis where they blast American music. The only thing I did that night remotely related to Israel was to make sure I drank Goldstar (Israeli beer). Not that I’m ungrateful for this amazing opportunity, but for three hours I didn’t even hear a word of Hebrew.
